Fishing (catch and release)
For some, a visit to the Kavango River is all about the thrill of the hunt. The river is home to the powerful Tiger Fish (a favorite among sport fishermen) and boasts over 105 different fish species, making it one of the region’s richest freshwater ecosystems.
Fishing excursions can be arranged either from the riverbank or by boat, depending on conditions. This experience is seasonal and influenced by water levels, and all fishing at Simanya is strictly catch and release, helping to keep our river healthy and thriving for generations to come.
During the dry season (September–December), water levels may drop too low for boat access. We recommend checking in with our team upon arrival to confirm availability of boat cruises and fishing options.

Birdlife
Simanya River Lodge is a birders paradise, with more than 300 species to be found in the area. The lodge that is situated at the most northern reach of Namibia, shares certain bird species with neighbor Angola, that are seldom sighted further south in the more arid midlands. Bird viewing excursions can be arranged to take place by, foot, boat or off-road.

Village Tours & Historical Site visits
Local village tours provide visitors with a deeper understanding of subsistence living, offering a firsthand look at the daily experiences of the indigenous people of Kavango.
Kavango West is steeped in history, with numerous historical sites still waiting to be uncovered. Many of these sites are in poor condition, and we are actively contributing to efforts to restore and make them more accessible to visitors. Among the sites we’ve identified is the graveyard of German soldiers and farmers dating back to 1910. Our most significant discovery to date is the Tondoro Mission Station, also known as the Cathedral of the Kavango Region, located just 35 km from Simanya.
Makoro Ride
Experience the timeless magic of river travel with a traditional makoro ride on the Kavango River. Glide silently across the water in this handcrafted wooden canoe as your local guide gently steers you along the riverbanks.
